I love anything salted. Something about salt added to desserts, especially chocolate just makes everything taste so much more decadent.

So, I had a random thought. Miso salted hot chocolate. Crazy but it’s kinda like soy sauce caramel, it just works. In fact, I’ve been adding miso paste to my hot chocolate for the past 2 weeks now and I’m OBSESSED.

Oh, and you know what else I’m loving right now? Oat milk. I get the hype now, friends. It is the perfect milk for hot chocolate, truly.

Ingredients for oat milk hot chocolate

This healthy salted hot chocolate is made with just 4 basic ingredients:

  • Oat milk: for the creamiest hot chocolate. You can also use any milk of your choice.
  • Maple Syrup: naturally sweetened! Substitute for your favourite sweetener.
  • Cocoa powder: preferably high quality dutch processed.
  • Miso paste: I used white miso paste since it’s more mild than red.
  • Chocolate: optional, but makes it extra rich and delicious.

How to make creamy oat milk hot chocolate (easiest way)

This recipe is so easy and quick that it’s kinda dangerous. Simply add all the ingredients, except the miso paste to a small sauce pan and heat it up. Once heated, dissolve the miso paste and whisk until combined. Using a whisk is key here to remove any clumps in the cocoa powder and miso paste and to ensure the bottom doesn’t burn. If you do have a miso paste muddler, it’s really handy to quickly get rid of the clumps.

Pour into your favourite mug, top with coconut whip cream or marshmallows… or even ice cream and enjoy!

  1. I was skeptical about the miso flavour but wow it adds just the right amount of umami + richness + depth of flavour!

  2. Will never buy hot chocolate mix again!! This is perfect. The miso adds just a little bit of depth and salt that I LOVE.

  3. This has become my favorite hot chocolate recipe. I love miso. I love chocolate. How did I never think to combine these two loves of mine? This is such an easy recipe, and the pop of salty goodness that the miso adds to the hot chocolate is the absolute best. Thank you for this recipe; I adore it.

  4. Totally in love with this! Pleasantly surprised with the taste, this sounds like an odd combination but if you’re curious, just go for it! It’s definitely worth it, great for the season!

  5. I love this recipe! As soon as I saw it I knew it would be a banger. The miso provides the perfect amount of salt and gives the drink a rich, luxurious mouth feel. And there is the added benefit of the miso being a fermented food. Yay for delicious food and healthy guts!

  6. such a fun twist on a traditional favourite! super rich and creamy and very easy to make!
I can’t wait to keep making this for myself and to introduce it to everyone around me!
    Thanks for sharing!!

  7. I am a sucka for miso + dark chocolate combo. I love it so much that sometimes I smear a tiny bit of miso on chocolate chips and pop them in my mouth, or smear some on dark chocolate. If you like bits of salt with your chocolate, the miso will elevate it with a touch of umami. 🙂 When i saw Lisa’s recipe for Salted Miso Hot Chocolate I was like OMG, why did I not think of this?! I whipped this one up and wow, it was everything I expected it to be…and in a mug! Waaaah! So simple and quick to make yet so “elevated.” I LOOOOOOOVE it! Thank you so much Lisa! Your creativity never ceases to amaze me! Love, love what you share with us…thank you so much for doing so! 🙂
